Maternelle : a genuine school

A genuine school

Maternelle is not a nursery or a childcare centre, but a genuine school where all teaching is based on French education programs. The children learn to socialise and develop independence, knowledge and skills and also study French, English and other languages.

Education, from Petite Section to Grande Section, is essential for children to succeed in the elemental learning phase and in Elémentaire, or Elémentaire, or elementary school. It also aims to develop cross-disciplinary skills including curiosity, the desire to learn, assertiveness, respect of others and independence.

What do children learn in maternelle?

The maternelle curriculum (http://www.education.gouv.fr/bo/2008/hs3/default.htm) introduces children to the most important areas of study before they start school. It takes into account the pace of development of each child and gives him or her the opportunity to explore while playing and developing sensory experiences, motor coordination, emotions and intellect. Learning is structured around these five fields of activity.
