Two languages in maternelle: a unique path to success

 

Due to the importance of having a good command of languages, Lycée Condorcet has implemented a new scheme based on the Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE) circular 'AEFE language policy: towards a multilingual education'. This program enables students to master the French and English languages orally before learning how to write them.

In Petite Section a bilingual scheme has been in place since the beginning of the 2013/14 school year and in the Moyenne since the beginning of the 2014/15 school year.

This teaching program is conducted in both French and English with an emphasis on the French programs. It focuses on:

  1. Strengthening the skills and knowledge of the child's mother tongue (French or English) while discovering and progressively strengthening the other language. In the first trimester of Petite Section, 75% of activities are conducted in the child’s native language. In the second and third trimesters, this changes to 50% French and 50% English.
  2. A cross-cultural approach which places the child at the heart of two linguistic and cultural worlds 
  3. Individual follow-up,
  4. A precise evaluation of the child’s abilities
  5. A team of teachers who individualise, alternate and juxtapose their instruction
  6. Increased communication with families.
